David Olson grew up and attended high school in Littleton, Colorado. Afterwards, he earned his Bachelors Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Colorado – Boulder in 1979. During his college days he concentrated his studies in the fields of thermodynamics, solar engineering and heat transfer. Dave was invited to join Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon, both engineering honor societies resulting from his success during his student activities in Boulder. Shortly after graduating from CU, he was hired as a Design Engineer for a consulting engineering firm in Lakewood, Colorado. He worked there for the next 7 years, designing HVAC systems for commercial, residential, institutional and industrial buildings of varying complexity.
David Olson formed Integrated Mechanical Systems, frequently referred to as IMS, as a consulting engineering firm in 1986. Over the past 30 years, he has designed and consulted on over 3,300 HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection projects. David Olson was Owner and President of this firm. David oversaw a staff of engineers, designers and draftsman and earned a reputation for performing solid engineering, detailed and accurate plans, and always conducting business with upmost professionalism and dedicated enthusiasm. During this time, Dave also taught HVAC design for three semesters at University of Colorado – Denver.
After 3 1/2 decades performing and supervising mechanical design work, David has redirected his activities to consulting and forensic mechanical engineering services. He is very well suited for this career path, having successfully designed buildings of nearly every type, size and complexity. Dave is very detail oriented and is not opposed to climbing in attics or crawling beneath buildings to discover the truth about existing mechanical system installations. With so many years of experience, he knows what he is looking at. Many have appreciated and complemented Dave on his detailed, thorough and organized written reports. He understands the importance of defending all statements included within the documents he authors. He appreciates the need to complete all assignments on time and for reasonable cost.
David is very knowledgeable in the governing building codes and standards. He has performed more than 1.300 commercial plan reviews for various city, county and state building departments. David is a certified Mechanical and Plumbing Plans Examiner by the International Code Council. Dave has also performed numerous mechanical peer review projects, many on complex building projects such as the Solaris and Ritz Carlton Hotel projects recently constructed in Vail, Colorado. His experience, training and knowledge of building mechanical systems has allowed Dave to excel at mechanical due diligence assignments such as completed for the Denver Merchandise Mart and Auraria Higher Education Center Arts Building. Dave has completed a number of historic structure assessments, such as those completed at Prowers County Courthouse and the Colorado Governors Mansion. These projects require a keen understanding of installed mechanical systems, along with knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of various mechanical system types and components. Dave possesses the patience needed to observe and document all building mechanical systems. He is very skilled at presenting information to his clients in an understandable and organized fashion.
David Olson has given freely of his time and talents to various professional societies. He is currently a member of ASHRAE, ASPE, NFPA, and ICC. These activities have broadened his position within the local engineering community, and has provided ongoing opportunities for seminars, training sessions and networking with colleagues in the Denver engineering community. Dave has held Chapter, Regional and Society level positions with ASHRAE, and has volunteered to chair numerous conferences and meetings. Currently Dave volunteers for the Rocky Mountain Chapter Sustainable Engineering Committee and is the ASHRAE liaison to the Sustainable Buildings Council of Colorado. Dave is a “Public at Large” voting member of the State of Colorado Electrical Board, appointed by State of Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.
During his free time Dave enjoys participating in golf, scuba and swimming. He spends time hiking and biking in the surrounding hills with family and friends. Downhill skiing has long been one of Dave’s passions, particularly at Steamboat and Mary Jane ski areas. He and his wife Pattie frequently spend vacation time scuba diving, mostly on the small island of Bonaire in the southern Caribbean, enjoying the multitudes of fish and the fascinating underwater landscape.
In June of 2016, Dave closed Integrated Mechanical Systems and joined PCD Engineering Services, Inc. in Longmont, Colorado. Dave’s title is Vice President. Dave will be performing quality control and front and back end project management for PCD. Dave will lend his expertise to assisting the staff at PCD in continuing their history of excellence. Dave will also lend a hand in PCD’s commissioning activities, performing peer review services on commissioning assignments which the firm undertakes. He will continue to perform building department code reviews, peer reviews, consulting and expert witness services as projects arise.
